Rules
Edition
NERO Indiana follows the 9th Edition NERO Rulebook.
Tags and Reps
NERO Indiana requires you to have a rep for every tag you carry. This includes treasure found on monsters or produced that event. You may use an in-period chest or box to carry treasure found on modules or that you are transporting, but you may not place un-represented treasure into your pouch or pocket. You may also carry un-represented treasure with both hands in front of you. NERO Indiana provides representations for most mundane tags, but these representations should be returned when the in-game item is used or destroyed.
- Components – NERO Indiana uses “Jumbo Craft Sticks.” These need not be returned when used.
- Potions, Elixirs, and Contact Poisons – NERO Indiana uses 3” Aquatubes.
- “Money Sticks” (Evaluate Item tags) – NERO Indiana provides appropriate representations for most Evaluate Item tags.
- Weapons, Shields, and Armor – NERO Indiana typically does not provide representations for mundane weapons and armor.
- Alchemical Gas Globes – NERO Indiana may provide representations for alchemical gas globes.
- Formal Scrolls – NERO Indiana provides usable, full-size representations for formal scrolls.
- Battle Magic Scrolls – NERO Indiana provides usable, full-size representations for battle magic scrolls. These do not need to be returned once used.
- Magic items – NERO Indiana provides representations for its magic items.
Immersion
“What do I see?”
This is a fair question in good lighting when the NPC is attempting to portray something non-human. Avoid shouting it across the field. In poor lighting, the description you receive may be vague “large humanoid” rather than “large metal humanoid.” NPCs that are actively hiding may not respond to this question, but that does not mean they are Out of Game.
Holds
Do not call a hold unless an emergency occurs. Do not call a hold for someone else unless that person cannot speak (ask if they need a hold). We try to role-play our hits in combat, so it is important to allow our NPCs and players to react accordingly without fear of a hold being called whenever they die magnificently. If you suspect there is a problem in combat, take a step back and assess the situation before calling “Hold.”
If it is important to notify someone of something Out of Game (such as a pole behind them), it is not necessary to
Field Rulings
Marshals will make ruling on the field of play to facilitate a speedy return to playing the game. A marshal’s call is final on the field. Adjudications may be requested at a later time, if warranted.
First Event
Costuming and Reps
You are permitted to use a limited amount of costuming and reps from NPC camp for your first event. Any item you take must be approved by a staff member and must be listed on your sheet.
Starting Gear
New players start with the following gear (tags):
- Up to three weapons (or a shield) that they have reps for and can use.
- A suit of armor worth the full amount they were awarded.
- A Cure Light Wounds potion.
- Three (3) Silver coins or one (1) gold coin, if silver is limited.
Event Fee
Your first event fee is waived.
Referrals
Referring a new player earns the referrer 200 goblins at the first event and 300 goblins when the player returns. The referrer is listed by the player and can be a different person each time. If the player lists nobody, the player receives the referral goblins.
Referring a new NERO player earns the referrer a half-priced event when the referred player attends a second NERO Indiana event and pays full price or NPCs.
Logistics
Adjudication
Requests for adjudication should be submitted within seven (7) days after the event to properly be considered. Requests for adjudication must be made in writing (e-mail is acceptable) to the Head of Plot.
Banks
NERO Indiana uses a bank system. The bank is entirely Out of Game. Any withdrawals must be made at the beginning of the event and any deposits must be made at the end of the event.
Use of the bank is optional, but if you withdraw money from your bank at check-in, you are required to deposit your coin at check-out. Exceptions are often made for players who intend to play at chapters that do not honor banks – just ask.
Battle Boards
All players must use battle boards to mark off their daily skills. Magic Item charges (for both active and inactive items) and cast spells must be listed on a battle board. NERO Indiana provides battle boards, but you may use your own or mark your skills on your character sheet if you desire. Update your battle boards after every encounter. Marshals may request to see them at any time.
Check In
Check in begins at 9 PM on Friday. To check in, please bring the following:
- Two (2) paper copies of your 9th edition character sheet
- Two (2) paper copies of your approved transform stat card, if applicable (One (1) for in-chapter transforms)
- Tags for every magic item or formal scroll you will be bringing into game
- Your receipt from PayPal or cash/check for the event
- A signed and filled out Legal Release/Consent Form
- If you are under 18, please have your guardian present at check-in
Every weapon must be checked every event by a NERO Indiana weapon marshal. Your checked weapons should be listed on your character sheet. Your awarded armor value should also be listed on your character sheet.
When you are checking in, please notify Staff if you need:
- Money for Craftsman Other skills
- Money from your bank
- An Evaluate Item sheet
- A Production form
- A Battle Board
- A Marshal Notes form
- Tags that were prepared for you prior to the event
Note that there is a $1 fee (to cover paper and ink) if we have to print your sheet for you.
Check Out
Character sheets, battle boards, banked coin, max-out coin, evaluate item tags & reps (to bank), temporary or damaged tags that you want re-issued next event, and any returned forms/reps should be placed inside a manila envelope. Please mark the envelope with your out of game name, character name, home chapter, and indicate how/whether you are maxing out. If your email address is not listed on your character sheet, please list it.
Max Out
At NERO Indiana, you may gain up to double the experience you would otherwise receive in the following ways:
- Paying 1 silver per additional experience point (Up to 1 silver per build point per 2 days)
- Paying 1 goblin per additional experience point
- NPCing two (2) hours per additional half-blanket
NERO Indiana allows NPCing for max-out but this does not mean that everyone will be approved to NPC. If NPCs are not needed when you volunteer, you will be turned away. We encourage you to determine when you will NPC ahead of time and to let Plot know.
Event Updates
After a NERO Indiana event, updates will be applied within two (2) weeks. If it is necessary for your event to be applied sooner - for an upcoming event, for example - please notify logistics and they will place a priority on updating your sheet.
Medical Forges
NERO Indiana allows medical forges when a player is unable to effectively utilize a significant portion of his or her build. The reason that (s)he is unable to utilize this build must be new and beyond his or her control. The cause does not have to be medically related. A medical forge may be granted to an Out of Chapter player while at a NERO Indiana event or to In Chapter players while playing locally and/or traveling. Medical forges are temporary and when the reason for the forge no longer exists the build change will be reverted.
For example, a fighter who sprains his or her ankle could use a medical forge to temporarily forge to a scholar.
Cast on the Fly
NERO Indiana uses cast on the fly for spells.
Goblin Blankets
In general, it is the player's responsibility to ensure that (s)he applies goblin blankets to his/her characters, as the National Database offers the ability to automatically apply goblin blankets weekly. However, NERO Indiana allows a player to request goblin blankets be applied to his/her characters as early as the beginning of the current calendar year or to 4 weeks prior to the player's first event, whichever is later.
Production
Goblin Production
Goblin production must be submitted at least one week prior to the beginning of the event. Typically this is the Friday prior to the event. Goblin production can be mailed on request, but allow at least three full weeks between when you request it and when it's needed.
Grab Bag or NPC Ticket Production
Grab Bag tags and NPC Ticket purchases must be submitted at least one week prior to the beginning of the event. Grab Bag and NPC Ticket tags can be mailed on request.
Grab Bag draws are performed electronically after an event. The results are emailed to each respective NPC. Certain draws are automatically applied to your sheet with the event updates - if you do not want these added (goblins and NPC tickets), please request for them to not be added. The Grab Bag draws and redemptions are recorded in a redundant database that is available to all owners. Grab Bag draws may be redeemed within one (1) calendar year of the date they are awarded. Any Grab Bag draw may be redeemed for a "default" award of 25 goblins.
Skill-Based Production
Production from PC skill levels may be submitted prior to the event, in which case it will be available at check-in. Please submit production with this form or by email. A production form may alternatively be submitted during the appropriate logistical period, though the delivery of your tags may be delayed. Up to one submission may be made per logistical period to account for acquiring coin in-game to cover materials-based production or for gathering orders in-game. Production that is submitted late may be issued on temporary tags or may not be available until the end of the event.
Reset
Limited Reset
NERO Indiana uses limited reset. Limited reset does not renew formal magic, cantrips, or production levels.
Floating Resets
Limited reset may be taken between 5 AM and 8 AM. Full reset may be taken between 5 PM and 8 PM.
Roleplaying Renewing Skills
Characters must role-play the renewal of their skills in an appropriate way.
Transforms
Out of Chapter Transforms
Some out-of-chapter transform cards have stats that do not fit the NERO Indiana campaign setting. Out of chapter transform stats must be submitted at least seven (7) days prior to a NERO Indiana event to be guaranteed that they will be approved or rewritten in time for the event. Make sure to print two (2) copies of your approved stat card and bring it to the event.
In Chapter Transforms
NERO Indiana transforms gain or lose power based on your action or inaction, even while you are not transformed. These changes are recorded on the transform sheet that we give you, so please do not lose it! Lost transform sheets can result in the loss of any unrecorded advancements. You may turn your transform sheet in at check-out.
Miscellaneous Policies
In Between Game Actions
Players may submit one set of written In Between Game Actions (IBGAs) per month. They may be submitted to any plot member. In order to guarantee consideration for a response, they must be submitted at least seven (7) days prior to the event. Note that not all IBGAs will generate results. Experience is not awarded for IBGAs.
Mini Mods
Per National policy, characters are limited to two mini mods per month. Requests to run mini mods must be submitted to the acting plot member. Mini mods will be run at the convenience of that plot member in a medium he/she approves. 0.25 blankets are awarded for a mini mod; this can be maxed out to 0.5 blankets.
Mini mods grant 1 silver per level of Craftsman skills to the player's bank.
Mini mods can be used for production and/or formal if they are the sole purpose of the mini mod. Base formal levels may be used (and nothing that requires levels from casting in Dark Territory). A player gains production as follows:
- 1/2 of Base levels, rounded up
- 1/2 of Master levels, rounded down
- 2 levels per silver spent (from bank), to a max of the Base levels (round up for silver spent)
- 0 levels for workshop use
For example, Elminster has 11 levels of scroll production. He receives 6 base levels, 5 Master levels, and can spend up to 6 silver to receive up to another 11 levels, for a total of 22 levels.
Non-combat participants (for medical or age reasons) wear orange headbands and may be referred to as a Page. They are able to deliver and receive and packet delivered attacks and participate in any role-play portions of the game. They also can be slain on a three count unless interrupted by another player.
Out of Game
NPCs may go Out of Game briefly by placing one weapon or one hand on their head. PCs are expected to wear white headbands if they need to go Out of Game.
The bathroom is an Out of Game area (white headbands are not required), but you cannot use it to avoid combat.
The kitchen is an Out of Game area, but conversations are in-game. Only the tavern keep, staff, and players with permission from the tavern keep may enter the kitchen. Even if you have permission to enter the kitchen, you may not flee into it to avoid combat.
Out of Game conversations should be avoided. If you have relevant rules or plot questions, try to phrase them in an in-game way.
Cell Phones or Electronic Devices
If you are using an electronic device, you are considered a temporary Page. Please only use these away from players and away from the field of play (in the bathroom is acceptable). Repeated use of electronic devices in in-play areas may result in
Unacceptable Costuming
If you are wearing any of the following clothing, you cannot be in-game (unless as a tabard-wearing monster, and even then, preferably not):
- Blue jeans
- T-shirts with logos
- Noticeably out-of-period clothing
Right of Refusal
NERO Indiana staff reserve the right to refuse service to anyone at any time. This refusal of service may never be based on racial, ethnic, sexual, or physical discrimination.
Sportsmanship
Marshals may remove a player displaying unsportsmanlike conduct from the game at any time. Cheating, rudeness (out of game), and unsafe combat are examples of what will get you removed from the game immediately. Warnings may be issued, but not required. Refunds for forced removal will not be issued.
Underage Players
Players between the ages of 14 and 18 must have at least one adult, parent approved guardian on site. A different release form is available for minors that must be signed by the parents. They must sleep in the same building as their guardian and their guardian must notify staff which building that is. If they leave the areas of the game that are supervised by staff, they must be accompanied by an approved adult guardian.
Players under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times. Please contact us well ahead of an event if you intend to attend an event with children 13 and younger.
Weapons
Weapons (guns, live steel weapons, knives, stun guns, etcetera) are not permitted on site, regardless of whether you have a permit to carry them. This applies to law enforcement personnel who are attending events as well.
Disciplinary Action
NERO Indiana uses the following chain of disciplinary actions to ensure a fun, immersive game for all. If you are issued a Red Card or higher penalty, you can appeal the penalty by contacting a Chapter Owner. If an offense is sufficiently serious, steps in this chain may be skipped.
Verbal Warning - A verbal warning can be issued by any marshal. It is typically issued when the player most likely did not realize that (s)he was doing something wrong. Please pay attention when you are warned, even if by another player. If you need to be warned again for a similar offense in the same event, the penalty can be higher.
Written Warning - A written warning is recorded on a player's character sheet and/or in Chapter notes. If a player would receive an additional written warning within 3 months, (s)he will instead receive a Yellow Card.
Yellow Card - A yellow card is recorded on a player's character sheet and in Chapter notes. Players that have been yellow carded are subject to additional scrutiny, particularly in relation to the offense for which they received the yellow card. Only Senior Plot and Chapter Owners can issue Yellow Cards and worse warnings. A Yellow Card is listed for six months.
Red Card - A red card is recorded on a player's character sheet and in Chapter notes. A Red Card is listed for one year. Receiving an additional Red Card in that time may result in worse penalties, such as temporary suspension or being banned from NERO Indiana. While a player has a Red Card listed on his sheet, (s)he suffers the following penalties (in addition to any specifically listed for that player):
- Upon resurrecting, (s)he draws with one more black stone in the bag, even if (s)he had not taken his free deaths.
- (S)he is not permitted to utilize the rolling reset and must present his/her battle board to a marshal as soon as (s)he has memorized his/her skills.
- (S)he may be prohibited from NPCing
- (S)he may be prohibited from attending certain mods that could result in situations where his/her offense would be likely to recur. For example, a player that repeatedly charged until he was red-carded for it could be prohibited from attending a combat mod in a smaller space.
- (S)he must pay for events with cash, and may not receive discounts.
Suspension - A suspension may be for any period of time ranging from 1 month to 1 year. Suspensions may be sent to other chapters in the region to see if they will honor them and will, at the least, be logged with your home chapter's logistics.
Ban - A player that is banned from NERO Indiana may not attend NERO Indy events. Players who are banned will be reported to Nationals and will be reported to other chapters in the region.
